Provincial Task Teams in Place

In order for the  National Intervention Strategy to be strengthened it was found that greater representation of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) on the National Task Team (NTT) was necessary.  Since the CSOs had a better grasp of the challenges found in their respective provinces they could therefore meaningfully address and report on the issues that exist. One of the main aims is to ensure fruitful implementation and coordination of activities relevant to LGBTI experiences. As a result, it was determined that two representatives from each province should be appointed to serve on the NTT. Furthermore, the DOJ&CD will provide financial assistance to the provincial partners for their effective establishment.

Thus far, PTTs have been formed in the Free State, Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal, North West, Western Cape provinces and one is yet to be formed in the Eastern Cape. The aim is for the NTT to build relations with CSOs, as well as to encourage CSOs to build relations with each other, especially since they have similar interests. Added to that it was important that LGBTI persons be represented. This collaboration would also ensure that regular progress reports were made available. The work of the Rapid Response Team (RTT) comprising the DOJ&CD, National Prosecuting Authority, South African Police Services and CSOs has particular importance as it was established to specifically respond to reported cases and crimes related to LGBTI persons. As yet South Africa is without a crime register that records crimes in which LGBTI persons have been targeted, and for this reason relevant statistics recording the extent and range of these crimes is lacking.

The task of addressing gender and sexual-based violence will require much dedication and continuity and the establishment of the PTTs will be instrumental in meeting the needs of LGBTI persons at a provincial level. Although there certainly may be an overlap in terms of experiences, strategies will also be created to meet the needs of each context
